Theatre Etiquette For Kids
Tips for parents to help raise the next generation of respectful theatre goers
BEFORE YOUR VISIT:
Talk with your children about what to expect and what will be expected of them.
Research and share any information about the synopsis of the production they will be seeing. Performances are most enjoyable for children if they understand the storyline.
Make sure your children have had a meal or snack so they are not feeling hungry during the performance. There is strictly no food or drink (other than water) allowed in theatre auditoriums.
Have your children go to the bathroom before leaving home or upon arrival to the theatre.
WHAT TO WEAR:
You will want your children to feel comfortable. But, it is tradition to dress up! Traditionally, matinee performances are less formal, and you dress as if you are going to a nice restaurant. Late afternoon and evening performances are more formal, dressing as if you are going to a wedding or “Sunday Best” clothing.
PLAN YOUR TRIP:
Make sure to allow enough time to travel to the theatre and park.
LATE ARRIVAL:
Please arrive before the start of the show, as late arrivals are disruptive to other members of the audience and the performers. However, if you are late, please enter only when you hear applause. This indicates the performance is between scenes. Upon entering, please sit in the designated late arrival section at the back of the auditorium until intermission, when you will have time to locate your seats.
DURING THE PERFORMANCE:
No talking once the performance begins.
No food, drink other than water, or gum.
No phones or tablets are permitted. Make sure to silence all devices.
Absolutely no photography or videoing of the performance.
Applause!! Please encourage your children to clap when the performers have finished dancing a scene or have executed something spectacular.
Laugh!!! It’s okay to laugh and giggle if the performers are doing something funny!
Please make sure your children are not kicking any seats around them and stay seated.
If your child begins crying, please take them to the lobby immediately. Once your child is ready, you may reenter the auditorium. Remember to reenter only when you hear applause, indicating there is a break in scene.
